Brexit: Jeremy Corbyn to visit Brussels for talks with EU negotiators
Jeremy Corbyn will visit Brussels next week for talks in a bid to circumvent the Brexit deadlock in Westminster.
The Labour leader is expected to meet EU lead negotiator Michel Barnier and European Parliament Brexit chief Guy Verhofstadt.
The visit – far from Mr Corbyn’s first to the EU capital – comes after senior EU figures have spoken out to welcome Labour’s proposals for a softer Brexit than the one planned by Theresa May.
Mr Barnier’s deputy Sabine Weyand said earlier this week that Labour’s plans deserved to be examined, while European Council president Donald Tusk is said to have spoken well of the proposals in a private meeting with Theresa May.
Mr Verhofstadt also said he welcomed Mr Corbyn’s letter to the prime minister, which called for a cross-party compromise that included a customs union, close alignment with the single market, adherence to EU workers’ rights, and “shared institutions and obligations”.
Spokespeople for Mr Barnier, Mr Verhofstadt, and Mr Corbyn declined to comment on the record about the planned visit when approached by The Independent, but it is understood that the Labour leader will come to Brussels on Thursday. An exact itinerary is still said to be under discussion between the parties.
The Government has relentlessly focused on trying to get the EU to concede changes to the Northern Ireland backstop, which Brexiteer MPs are resolutely opposed to.
The European Union has however responded by saying it will not reopen the withdrawal agreement – but that the UK should change its red lines to build a closer future relationship with the EU that could avoid the backstop being triggered.
This has put Labour and Brussels on roughly the same page – with the opposition party’s proposals going down well in the EU capital.
Though the prime minister has held talks with other parties, including Labour, about a cross party way forward, they have yet to bear any fruit. The prime minister is reported to be sceptical about whether her MPs would back the sort of close future relationship Labour is demanding.
Mr Corbyn last visited Brussels in September, where he met with feared Commission official Martin Selmayr, as well as Mr Barnier.
The Labour leader was in the Belgian capital then to attend a naming ceremony for Place Jo Cox, a square named after the Labour MP murdered by a far-right extremist during the EU referendum campaign.

Measles Outbreak in Jewish Orthodox Community Hits 200 Cases
The disease, once considered beaten, is on the rise in the US again as several outbreaks have been registered over the recent months. It has already prompted authorities in Clark County, Washington, declared a public health emergency.
The number of measles infections in New York’s Rockland County has hit 135; five new cases have been registered this week alone, The Daily Beast reports. When coupled with the 73 people diagnosed with the disease in Brooklyn, the total number of contaminations has topped 200 statewide, alarming local health officials. According to the website, a dozen recent cases have been registered in Orthodox Jewish communities.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day has branded the situation in his area “the longest measles outbreak since the disease was declared ‘eradicated’ nearly 20 years ago”, with a record-breaking number of infections. In his Facebook post, the official pointed at “the risks and dangers of being unvaccinated”.
“We have had to deal with the worry, fear and legitimate concerns of our citizens, especially those with infants who are to [sic] young to be immunized against this disease, one that could seriously medically impair or cause the death of that infant,” he posted.
The outlet cites New York City health authorities naming several possible reasons for the recent outbreak. This includes later-than-average vaccination, propaganda targeting vaccines and a considerable number of travelers from Israel, which is experiencing a measles outbreak.
Measles, a very contagious virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of infected individuals, has seen a 30 percent increase in cases globally since 2016. Last month, officials in Clark County, Washington, declared a public health emergency due to a measles outbreak.
Insular communities, like the Orthodox Jewish enclaves in New York, Amish Christians in Ohio and Muslim Somali-Americans in Minnesota, have been hit with measles outbreaks over the past years.
The virus can be prevented with the MMR vaccine, which also protects against mumps (a viral infection that affects the salivary glands) and rubella (a viral infection that is identified by the distinctive red rash it causes).
"The reasons for this rise are complex, and not all of these cases are due to vaccine hesitancy," the WHO clarifies. "However, some countries that were close to eliminating the disease have seen a resurgence."

Malavika's Mumbaistan: A Traveller's Tales
Publisher and polymath Alex Kuruvilla and wife Namita hosted a sparkling reception for visiting-author-investment banker and political commentator Ruchir Sharma at their home on Wednesday evening. Seen on the occasion was an eclectic group of journalists, fashionistas, politicians and bureaucrats, many of who had been part of the numerous road trips the New York-based Sharma has undertaken over the last 25 years, while tracking India’s electoral process. The best-selling author of Breakout Nations and The Rise and Fall of Nations, who arrived directly from a session with newsman and TV anchor Shekhar Gupta, delivered a short, humour-filled introduction to his newest tome, ‘Democracy On the Road: A 25 Year Joinery through India’, described as a political travelogue. “There are basically four types of people who undertake such trips,” he said, about his observations on travelling through the Indian heartland along with leading media mavens like Radhika and Prannoy Roy, Suman Dubey and Rajiv Shukla (before he joined politics); citing among them ‘those who refuse to get out of the car and talk to people’ and ‘those who get out and insist on lecturing the crowds’. Sharma’s anecdotal speech alluding to his encounters with India’s leading politicians and power elite, from ‘Samosas at Laloo’s and laddoos with Mulayam’ to his group’s contentious meet with BJP president Amit Shah, demonstrated how the head honcho of leading investment bank Morgan Stanley (who is said to oversee a $25 billion hedge fund) has captured the imagination of readers and ordinary folk alike, with his humane, easy-going approach and attention to detail. His delivery was followed by another hilarious political anecdote, this time from Mumbai-based businessman Uraaz Bahl, a close friend and confidante of Milind Deora (who was also present), who narrated, how in 2004 the two friends, newly-enthused by Deora’s candidacy for the south Mumbai constituency, had attempted to kick off their campaign by approaching voters at Mumbai’s Priyadarshini Park personally. According to Bahl, all had gone swimmingly well and the two were greatly encouraged by the success of their very first ‘personal electoral outreach’ when the first gentleman they engaged with, appeared to give them his undivided time and attention. “It was only at the end of our encounter when we asked him for his name that he informed us he was none other than Jayawantiben Mehta’s brother, who happened to be Milind’s chief opponent for the seat,” said Bahl, to much laughter.
True Lies
He is known in the most exclusive of international fashion circles as one of the biggest buyers of their merchandise, and his slight, always expensively-attired frame is spotted in the company of Europe’s biggest fashion names being wined and dined by the best of them (His preferred drink of choice currently being Dom Pérignon the premier vintage offering P2). And yet, in India, this North Indian gent keeps a low profile. “He rolls into the most expensive luxury stores across the world and is known to buy out everything they carry each season, without a second glance,” shared a leading luxury house maven, about the antics of the mysterious, high-spending North Indian gent. And for who on earth does he buy all the expensive jewels and bags and shoes by the dozen? If sources are to be believed, for none other than various big ticket politicians back home in India! No, not for their own consumption silly. In socialistic India, that would not go down too well, of course. No, the reason why he buys truckloads of luxury goods is for their numerous mistresses! Now, if that isn’t thoughtful – we don’t know what is.
Mallya’s Sweet Spot In India
His unease about being incarcerated in an Indian prison notwithstanding there appears to be one sweet spot in the country that is keeping beleaguered liquor tycoon and economic offender Vijay Mallya in good spirits. Yesterday, after a long tirade against the government, Mallya showed that he has some reason to cheer. “Bless my friends who brought me my favourite chocolate from my favourite town where I grew up,” the London-based Mallya shared on social media, along with a photograph of his precious cargo: a slab of Kingstar Chocolates from Ooty. Good to know that Mallya, who has been celebrated for his flamboyant lifestyle and his penchant for buying the best of life that money could buy, has not lost his sweet tooth, championing a modest brand from India over celebrated international brands such as Switzerland’s Teuscher and Belgium’s Godiva. And, as the hours to his extradition seem to mount and the King of Good Times is in danger of losing his famous title, it appears that thanks to his thoughtful mates, the King of Good Times at least still has his Kingstar to keep him company.
Delicious Art Camp
After a hiatus of many years, industrialist and art aficionado Harsh Goenka hosted one of his art camps at his cozy, sea-facing cottage in Marve, this week. The camps, initiated in the early 90s (we recall attending one of the first where curiously, former PM VP Singh had been present in his capacity as a weekend painter), is conducted over a few days and the participating artists are encouraged to interact with each other, get inspired by the salubrious surroundings and paint in a convivial atmosphere. The collective output of these efforts, we are informed, will be exhibited at an event hosted by Goenka at his CEAT headquarters, later in March. This year’s program saw the likes of Anjolie Ela Menon, Kahini Arte Merchant and Rini Dhumal attend, and is said to have also featured some of them like Dhumal, Menon and gallerist Vickram Sethi cooking up their favourite dishes for the assembly. And with talk of the antics of a famous art fraud consuming the art world currently, we are sure the conversations were as delicious as the fare on the table!

aaj tak - Does asthma run in the family?
Does asthma run in the family?
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that causes inflammation in the airways. This inflammation causes the airways to swell and become very sensitive. It can lead to wheezing and chest tightness.
Asthma affects people of all ages and genders. According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), 8.3 percent of people in the United States have asthma. However, some people may be more likely to develop asthma than others.
In this article, we look at whether different types of asthma have genetic links, other causes and risk factors of asthma, and treatments.
Are different types of asthma genetic?
Genetics can affect the likelihood of a person having asthma.
All types of asthma can have a genetic component. Some different types of asthma include:
- adult-onset asthma
- exercise-induced bronchospasm
- allergic asthma
- nonallergic asthma
- occupational asthma
- asthma with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
A person is more likely to develop asthma if they have a family history of the condition. This means that asthma can be genetic. Some researchers describe it as a "highly heritable disease."
According to a 2014 review study, genetic factors account for around 70 percent of a person's risk of developing asthma, meaning that genes play a large role in whether or not a person develops the condition.
However, genetics are not the only cause of asthma. Some people develop it when they have no family history of the condition. Likewise, a person may have a genetic tendency toward asthma but never actually develop it.
Genetics play less of a role in asthma development later in life, so adult-onset asthma and occupational asthma are slightly less dependent on genes.
A person can also develop asthma without any genetic predisposition for the condition. In fact, many environmental factors can cause a person to develop it.
Causes
Some people may find that exercise triggers asthma symptoms.
Both genetics and environment play a role in the development of asthma, but scientists still do not know the exact causes. That said, they have identified a number of triggers for asthma symptoms.
Asthma triggers can vary from person to person and may include:
- respiratory infections, including the cold or flu
- irritants in the air
- air pollution
- tobacco smoke
- exercise
- cold air
- medications, including beta-blockers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- stress
- food and drink preservatives
- allergens, including dust, dander, and pollen
- acid reflux
Risk factors
A number of risk factors can increase a person's chances of developing asthma.
Genetics, or family history of asthma, raise a person's likelihood of developing asthma at some point in their life.
Other risk factors for asthma include:
- being overweight
- smoking
- having allergies or other allergy-related conditions
- frequent exposure to secondhand smoke
- exposure to other forms of pollution, such as exhaust fumes
- exposure to occupational irritants, including chemicals and dust
Symptoms
Asthma symptoms and their severity vary by person. Some may have symptoms frequently, while other people may only experience them occasionally.
Asthma symptoms can include:
- wheezing
- chest tightness
- difficulty breathing
- shortness of breath
- coughing
Sometimes, triggers can cause a short period of worsening symptoms called asthma attacks. When a person has an asthma attack, their bronchial tubes constrict.
During an asthma attack, the symptoms of asthma may become severe and need a rescue inhaler or, in some cases, emergency medical attention.
Symptoms of an asthma attack include:
- a feeling of the chest rapidly tightening
- rapid breathing
- a blue tint to the skin and nails
- shortness of breath not related to physical activity
- chest retractions
- an inability to take a full breath
Not all people with asthma have all of these symptoms. Also, just because a person has these symptoms, it does not mean that they have asthma.
Treatments
Cleaning the home regularly can help remove allergens and reduce asthma symptoms.
Asthma treatments aim to help a person manage the symptoms and prevent asthma attacks. Treatments may also lessen the long-term damage to the lungs that can occur with poorly controlled asthma.
A doctor may recommend a combination of treatment methods.
Long-term medical treatments for asthma can include:
- long-term inhaled asthma control medications, including corticosteroids, combination inhalers, and bronchodilators
- allergy medications
Doctors may also prescribe fast-acting, short-term medications for asthma attacks. These can include:
- oral or intravenous steroids to reduce airway swelling in severe attacks
- fast-acting bronchodilators
- short-acting beta antagonists, such as albuterol inhalers
Also, a doctor will likely recommend that a person with asthma try some lifestyle modifications to help control their symptoms.
Lifestyle modifications that a person with asthma can try may include:
- identifying and avoiding triggers
- using air conditioning to avoid outdoor asthma triggers
- cleaning the home regularly to avoid dust and mold
- covering the mouth and nose in cold weather
- managing stress and strong emotions
Summary
Asthma has genetic components, but it can also have other causes and risk factors, especially in adult-onset asthma.
People can usually manage their asthma well using medications. However, some people may find their asthma symptoms difficult to control.
In such cases, it is best for people to identify their triggers and try to avoid them as often as possible.
